This is a wonderful reproduction of a Flemish Tapestry that was commisioned in the 15th century by King Sigismund Augustus to bemade for Wawel Casle in Cracow,Poland.Wawel Castle was used for coronation ceremonies of polish kings and burials of historical figures.The original tapestry was made of wool,silk and gilded silver thread and as of the making of this tapestry was owned by The State Art Collections,Wawel Castle.The size of this piece is app.17 1/4 x 7 1/4 inches without the frame.This tapestry is rather different from others that I have seen and I am not quite sure who the maker was,or what it is made of.The piece is fabric,and although I am not an expert on fabric I believe this is either muslim? or possibly wool.On the back t is a short explanation on the tapestry,but mainly it is in a different language so I do not understand it.The tapestry is of three deer running through the woods and in the back ground you can see a mountain cat watching them.As I said I am rather puzzled on the construction of this piece,to me the tapestry appears to be a (thick)laminated print that was placed on fabric.It does not appear as though the stitching goes through.The only other thing that might possible make sense is that the tapestry was laminated and then mounted on the other piece of fabric.The greens,browns and blacks are still vibrant but the whites are yellowing from age.Otherwise then the slight yellowing the piece is in fine shape.The frame measures app.8 1/4 x 18 1/4 inches.The gesso on the frame appears to have been exposed to a chemical on the left hand side and appears to have been eaten away to expose the wood.T is also minor scratches right under w the hook to hang it is.Thank you for your interest!
