Prado Museum, Madrid. The series of nine hunting cartoons executed in 1775 gave Goya an opportunity to prove his skill in this type of secular decoration which he had never undertaken before. His first child was born at the end of that year and, conscious of his new responsibilities, he applied for a fixed annual salary. Mengs was consulted and gave his opinion, on 18 June 1776, to the effect that Don Francisco Goya has also worked for the Royal Tapestry Factory, he is a person of talent and intelligence, who is capable of making great progress in his Art, supported by the Royal munificence, and at the present time he is already proving himself useful in the service of the King. He proposed he should be granted eight thousand reales a year. After his favorable testimonial from the great Mengs, Goya was given a more important commission, this time for the dining room of the prince of Asturias in the palace of El Prado. The ten cartoons were completed between 30 October 1776 and 25 January 1778. Goya delivered the Dance, the second in the series, on 3 March 1777 and was paid eight thousand reales. It already shows a much greater ease and assurance in the handling. Majos and majas are harmoniously grouped and the landscape is one of the most topographically convincing that he ever painted: the river Manzanares with the cupola of the recently completed church of San Francisco el Grande and the green trees of the Casa del Campo. He was conscious of his rapid progress and in April of the same year wrote Zapater that he was already painting in a more acceptable way. YOU ALSO GET: (2) THE QUEEN OF MARTYRS (Detail #1). On 23 May 1780 an agreement was reached between Bayeu and the Pilar authorities; on 5 October the sketches were presented to the building committee which examined them with great attention and pleasure and ordered that the work should begin at once. Goya was given the subject of The most Holy Virgin Mary Queen of Martyrs, and one of his two sketches together with a part of the fresco are shown here. Having been made an academia in the previous month of May, he was now full of his new dignity and did not relish the idea of carrying out this important commission, in his native province, under the direction of a man whose equal he now considered himself. Goya (y Lucientes), Francisco (José) de: Artist, born in Fuendetodos, NEC Spain. After travelling in Italy, he returned to Spain to design for the Royal Tapestry factory. In 1798 he produced a series of frescoes, incorporating scenes from contemporary life, in the Church of San Antonio de la Florida, Madrid, and over 80 satirical etchings, Los caprichos (1799, The Caprices). He became famous for his portraits, and in 1799 was made court painter to Charles IV, which led to The Family of Charles IV (1800, Prado) and other works. He settled in France in 1824.
