Found in a local brocante shop, this framed panel is a French soldier's memoire of his military career. I believe the background is perforated paper. On this are a variety of applied and sewn items. At the top is embroidered the words " Honneur et Patrie " - "honour and fatherland" - in red chenille thread outined in gold thread. This is the motto of the Legion d'Honneur. Beneath that, embroidered in pale green wool, are the words " Allons Enfants " - the first two words of the French national anthem Le Marseillaise . Beneath that is a celluloid relief of "Marianne" and the words " Dieu le veut " - "God wills it so". Next is another celluloid panel forming a frame for a photograph of the soldier whose military career is comemmorated by this collage. It is placed between two pieces of tricolor (the blue , white and red French flag) ribbon in the form of a banner supported by two poles embroidered in gold thread and flanked by an embroidered number 36 and a hunting horn - these must be the number and symbol of his regiment or division. The photograph itself is of the "carte de visite" type and shows a young man in his uniform with huge epaulettes. The photograph was taken by a photographer in Caen, Normandy. It's possible t is an identifying name on the back of the photo, but I've not taken the panel out of its original frame,
