A spectacular small Emille Galle inlaid, or marquetery, table is offered for your consideration. Acquired from one of the leading French art deco and art nouveau dealers, this table is guaranteed 100 percent original Galle and a once-in-a-lifetime find. Presented is a fantastic "talking" inlaid small table made in the Galle studio in Nancy (France) between 1885 and 1914. The top shows a rooster, poppies and a text thats says: "Quand ce coq chanté aura, mon amitié pour vous finira", ie. "When this cock (rooster) will have sung, my friendship for you will end." The texts of Emile Galle furniture were most often allusions to the opposition between Germany and France. In this period, Alsace and a part of Lorraine (Nancy was in the French part) were occupied by Germany (since 1871). So, in these provinces, French people lived with German people. Sometimes they were even friends. The rooster is the symbol of France. In the table, it is singing a declaration of the war to come (WWI). This text tells the French people "When the war will be declared, your German friends will become your enemies and you will have to fight them."
The production of talking furniture was rare and very few examples remain, especially in this pristine condition. Production of inlaid wood tables in the Galle factory began about 1885 and ended with the death of Emile Galle. Some models were continued until the war in 1914. The inlay work is spectacular and contains precise patterns and noble woods. The legs are poppies. The table stands about 28 inches high and is shaped in a chevron pattern. This is a high-quality piece of vintage French art nouveau furniture. While Emile Galle is better known for art glass works, the inlaid tables are appreciating rapidly due to their rarity. This piece is in perfect condition and has been hand polished with pad (gomme-lac) like it was in the Art Nouveau period. Incised signature (pyrogravure) " Galle " in the pattern (see photo). Please ask all questions first and I'm happy to send more photos or details if desired. Happy bidding and bid with confidence as I have a perfect record as a bidder and seller and want to keep it that way.
