Vintage Gardiner Mackinac Island Hand Tinted Photo Beautiful framed hand tinted photo of North Shore Drive on Mackinac Island early 1900s by famous Canadian William H. Gardiner. Photo itself measures 9-1/4" x 4-1/2". It is in its original frame and matt (14"x9"). The matt does have some water damage, but the photo looks perfect. I did not want to tear open the backing because by doing so would detract from the originality of the item. T is pencil writing on bottom left "North Shore Drive" and bottom right "Mackinac". I believe "W. Gardiner" will be found under the word Mackinac as that is w he signed his tinted art, however, whoever framed this must have covered the signature, but I am not positive. It is most surely the work of William Gardiner most noted for his photos of Mackinac Island as can be seen in the collections of Mackinac State Historic Parks. This would be an awesome addition to tinted photo collection such as done by Gardiner and Nutting or a great antique piece for a lover of Mackinac Island. "A true distinction of Mackinac Island photographer William H. Gardiner’s work, and the one that would become his legacy, was the production of hand-tinted views. They were a charming keepsake for the early twentieth-century Mackinac Island visitor. Hand-tinted scenic views were popularized in the United States by Wallace Nutting. read more
