This is a German made Trapper style hunting knife that was imported by New York retailer Hoffritz. During its early days (and this piece is certainly from their early days) Hoffritz imported and retailed some very high quality knives. This piece is one of them and was no doubt made by one of the fine German makers, likely in Solingen. Anton Wingen Jr. made several models of knives for Hoffritz and they did have a Trapper model, but I have no idea if this was made by them or not. The Trapper is one of the better made and more desirable models. It's a pretty straight forward design and not a mish-mash of various parts like many of the German "tourist" hunting knives from this period. It's a very solid and functional knife that is the same model that Abercrombie & Fitch and several other high-end retailers marketed to well-to-do sportsman and hunters. The knife has seen moderate use and remains in very nice condition with just some light sharpening and grind marks from a sloppy sharpening. The blade appears to have been buffed. The blade is hand forged and very thick and the grind is excellent. The edge is excellent with no nicks or chips. The blade is nearly full and quite sharp.
