This compass is marked "R. Fuess / Berlin Steglitz / 30982" on the front. This compass is a "German Artillery Spotter Pioneer Infantry Compass" according to compass descriptions at the Snyder's Treasures website. We will be quoting their description for the item, as it is much better than we could do:
"This compass is marked in circular mils and not degrees. It probably used by an artillery spotter or engineer (pioneer). T are markings for the four cardinal points with radium dots (the radium is long dead). The letters are also marked, as are the major increments. It is indexed by the 4s from 0 (64) to 60 counterclockwise. T is a settable arrow, and the bright white jeweled needle is marked to indicate North and also radium painted at the North tip. T is a mirror to assist getting bearings when sighting. The sights are a buckhorn and point , similar to a rifle. T is a radium guideline on the inside cover to assist in low light or nighttime use. A needle lifter immobilizes the needle when the cover is closed. T is a folding scale (60mm indexed on the 10s and marked in millimeters). The compass measures 2-3/8 inches closed." The compass does have wear to the finish, showing much of the brass body. However, the body is in great shape with no real damage. The folding scale is present and still moves freely. Our compass has the original leather strap still attached. The mirror on the inside of the compass needs a good cleaning and has lost a bit of its mirrored finish. Please e-mail us with any questions.
