Up for auction is a beautifully woven large sized splint ash Great Lakes potato or vegetable gathering basket with a bentwood handle carved and notched to fit over the thick whittled bentwood rim. This particular example was made by a talented weaver of the Winnebago tribe, one of the Great Lakes Indian tribes. Be sure to notice the herringbone weave on the base and the nice symmetrical shape on the body of the basket. The dye is beautiful - a teal green color with coral stripes, and the wood is old enough to have developed the beginnings of a nice aged patina. A very nice vintage basket!

The basket, as noted, is a nice large and showy size for use or display, measuring a square 13½" across at the rim and 8" deep (about 13" to the top of the handle.) It is in near-perfect condition. I've examined it carefully and am pleased to report that t are no breaks or any damage whatever. Just a little faded on one side. The rim, base, and handle are in perfect shape. Plus, this basket is guaranteed to be of Indian manufacture, and is an excellent example of their craft. See photos, as they give a true picture of this vintage basket's condition. It would make a terrific farmer's market basket for this summer's vegetables and is still sturdy enough that you could harvest your potatoes with it if desired.
