Up for auction is a beautifully woven medium sized splint ash Great Lakes market basket with a thick whittled bentwood handle carved and notched to fit over the thick whittled bentwood rim. It has an oblong base morphing to an oval rim, and a single wider ash splint just under the rim as an accent. This particular basket was made by a talented weaver of the Winnebago tribe, one of the Great Lakes Indian tribes. If you look at the sides, you can still see faint traces of the old dyes the weaver chose for her creation. The wood is old enough to have developed the most gorgeous aged patina. A very nice old basket!

The basket, as noted, is a nice medium size, perfect for use or display, measuring 13½" by 8½" across at the rim and 8" deep (13" to the top of the handle.) It is in great condition for its advanced age - in fact, I am pleased to tell you that t are no broken or missing splints on the entire basket. Every rim wrap is intact. Its only flaw (very minor) is some light stains on the base - it looks like someone really used this basket to gather their vegetables. See photos, as they give a true picture of this vintage basket's condition. If you fast-forward to the present, it would also make an outstanding farmer's market basket for you to tote this summer's vegetables.
