Up for auction is a beautifully woven medium sized splint ash Great Lakes berry basket with a bentwood swing handle and a bentwood rim. This particular example was made by a talented weaver of the Winnebago tribe, one of the Great Lakes Indian tribes. Look how the ends of the handle are pierced and woven back together, creating a swing handle. And just like the large gathering baskets of this type, this nice basket features whittled pins holding the handle in place. It also has a herringbone weave on the base and a nice symmetrical shape. And you can still see the old dyes the weaver chose for her creation, although the green is most visible on the inside of the basket. And the wood has developed a beautiful aged patina. A very nice old Indian basket!

The basket, as noted, is more petite than many of these old Winnebagos, measuring 9" across at the from handle to handle and 7" deep (about 12" to the top of the handle when it is raised.) Because of its age, it has a couple of flaws, as follows: T are several small missing pieces of splint on the sides and a single missing rim wrap, but no gaping holes or any serious damage. See photos, as they give a true picture of the basket's condition. Plus, this basket is guaranteed to be an old one of Indian manufacture, and is an excellent example of their craft.
