Authentic Hand-Carved Korean Wedding Ducks
These charming Wedding Ducks circa 1970 were beautifully hand-carved in Korea from an indigenous hardwood, probably elm or chestnut. Each measures 9” long and 5” high. Traditionally, the bill of the female is tied shut with string. In this pair, however, the female is liberated, an equal partner – no strings attached. The figures are carved individually by hand, making each one a unique piece of folk art. Thanks for looking! The Story of Korean Wedding DucksAccording to custom, the parents of newlyweds in Korea purchase carved wooden Wedding Ducks as a way to wish their children a long and happy marriage. Ducks mate for life, and so should the newly married couple. The man chosen to carve the ducks, by tradition, must be a good friend, pure and honorable, for he shares his spirit and fortune with the young couple. He agrees to carve the birds not for money but for the honor of the task. More important than his skills as a sculptor are his personal traits and his Five Fortunes, which he will share with the couple. To possess Five Fortunes means he must be rich, healthy, never divorced, happily married to a “good wife,” and father of many sons. While carving the ducks, the man prays in his heart that happiness and good fortune will bring peace and prosperity to the bride and groom, and that just as ducks lay many eggs, the couple will have many children. The ducks are carried to the wedding ceremony wrapped in colorful cloth and placed on a table. At the end of the ceremony, the groom’s mother throws a duck to the bride, who attempts to catch it in her apron. If she succeeds, she will have a son. If she misses or drops the duck, her first child will be a girl. The ducks, prominently displayed in the couple’s home, then become something of a barometer of the domestic “atmosphere” of the household – an indicator of how well husband and wife are getting along. Placed bill-to-bill, things are going swimmingly. Tail-to-tail signifies stormy waters. For the rest of their lives, the ducks serve as a reminder of their peaceful wedding and, at times, even as a peacemaker. Should the man and wife quarrel, one of them points to the ducks and harmony is restored. .
