I've seen these railroad spike and cable "Damascus" knives made by many different makers over the years, but this is the finest of the bunch. This piece was crafted by Perry Pearce, probably in the late 1960's to early 1970's. Mr. Pearce passed away a few years ago and I believe his grandson is still making some knives. Pearce made some unique knives out of everything from box end wrenches to horseshoes. If it was made from a chunk of steel, he could bang it into a beautiful knife. This piece much more refined and "finished" than many of these that were made as novelty pieces. Pearce's knives were not made as novelty pieces, but as working knives that would perform as well as they would display. I apologize for the horrible pics on this one. The knife's surfaces are so reflective that my camera over compensated and the photos came out dark. The blade and all of the edges are highly polished to a deep mirror finish. Knife has a 4" blade and measures just under 8-3/4" in overall length. It has never been used or sharpened and is in perfect condition. The head of the spike still bears the letters "HCX". The handle is actually very comfortable and t's a thumb rest forged into the top of the blade. As you can imagine, this is a very sturdy knife with a very thick blade.
