You are bidding on a vintage, Made in England, Hardy Marquis Salmon No. 1 fly reel with the silver face. The reel is in good condition with minimal signs of wear considering its age. Few scuffs on the perimeter of the reel body, retains 99%+ of its original baked enamel finish. Springs are nice and strong and has the destinctive Hardy sound when a fish is on the line! The original owner did inscribe his name on the reel body, but it's not really an eyesore. Above the Marquis name is "Gary R. Johnson" in small letters, and below that is "138-50-8361" also in small letters. The inscription for the most part does not even appear to have fully penetrated through the enamel. The reel is setup for right hand wind with new Dacron backing...can easily be reversed to left hand wind. An Ebay member was kind enough to forward me the following information: "What I do know is t was a New York guide on the Salmon River named Gary R Johnson, that passed away from cancer in 1994. I was at the monument left by his mom & dad yesterday. If I remember right, he lived on the west coast for a while & returned later to the east. Also the number looks to be a US Social Security number. The first 3 didgets indicate that the SS card was filed for in the state of New Jersey." Maybe the prospective buyer will find this bit of history interesting. Cheers.
