Up for auction is an absolutly stunning and very desirable Vintage Hawaiian Quilt. It measures 65" X 98". Hawaiians use whole cloth, then appliqué a second piece of cloth on top to create a colored silhouette of the image -- this quilt is an outline of a Hawaiian flower blossom. It is done like a big paper cut-out, one big pattern made from two pieces of cloth. The Hawaiians also use fine stitching to reinforce their designs. It is called an echo pattern. They do the stitching in concentric rings around the image, almost like dropping a stone in water, w you have the ripples of stitching fanning out. This quilt is very finely stitched. This quilt was brought back to the mainland in 1942 by a Pearl Harbor survivor. It came from the estate of the Hines family. They were stationed at the U.S.N Hospital, Pearl Harbor on Honolulu. This quilt has never been used. It was brought back in a camphor chest and that is were it stayed untill today. My belief is that it dates 1939-1941. Due to the fact that it is unused I do not believe it is any older than that. I have seen many similar quilts that people claim are from the turn of the century but due to my knowledge of were it came from I believe my dating is correct. This quilt is done by a master. It is stunning. The quilt does have some yellowing in some spots. The pink is super vibrant and is as bright as the day it was made. The yellow spots were on most of the linens stored in this chest. I am not really sure what exactly it is from. The quilt was folded and as you can see on the back the exposed fold has the most yellowing. It has not been touched. It has no oder. It has never been cleaned or used. It is fresh out of the estate of a WWII Pearl Harbor Survivor and sold as I found it. Make sure and check out some other great Hawaiian items from the same estate.
