A set of experimental Herman Miller tables by Eames. These are a match set, black micarta tops (same as used on ESU's) and wire bases. These bases are the chair type - but these too are experimental, they have different bends and rod lengths from each other and from the production wire base. I have seen one other table like this in Modern One in LA about 9 years ago. That one was the same but in a larger scale. These were most likely put together in Herman Millers Design shop in the erly 1950's. They worked closely with the desingers. Designing furniture back then was at time a bit casual. Eames would often put things together and then photograph them and do his design calculations from what they looked like in that scale, what we artist call thum-nails. I think the bases did not work for this design as they can not be consistantly level due to the complex structure. You see - if you know this chair, you know that the legs even themselves out when you sit in it. Well with only a thin top - they would be prone to have a wobble. The two I have do not, but in a production - they would. The wire structure would also compete with a chair with the same base. The LTR on the other hand was more simple, however too low for many applications - hence why the experimanted with these tables. Herman Miller did dozens of such experiments. They read more
