Welcome to Marie's Vintage Perfumes. This store is a collection of vintage perfume bottles from the estate of Marie-Louise Fredyma, my mother who passed away in 2010 after nearly 70 years in the antique business. Marie's perfumes were a special place in her collection of antiques and vintage items and are now offered for sale as part of her estate. Description: Vintage/antique Houbigant Le Parfum Ideal Perfume Bottle (1900). Bottle is marked "Le Parfum Ideal" in top left corner of a brilliant gold lable depicting woman smelling a flower and "Houbigant on label base. On opposite side bottle it is marked "Houbigant, New York, 1/4 Oz.". Bottle is 2 1/4" in height and 1" x 1" square. Bottom is marked with a paper label reading "8" that is related to bottles made by Baccarat. Houbigant early perfumes often used Baccarat bottles in their production which are often sought by vintage perfume collectors. Bottles prior to 1936 were not always stamped Baccarat. The modest shop was located at no. 19 rue de Faubourg Saint-Honore, Paris and was named "A la Corbeille de Fleurs". His first products were toilet waters, scented gloves and powders. In 1872, most of the products from the House of Houbigant were sold to the French aristocracy, nobility, clergy and the best known names in France. Among his most famous clients were Queen Marie Antoinette, who reportedly hurried to Houbigant to get her perfume bottles refilled with Eau de Mousseline and Eau de Millefleurs before fleeing from Paris. The company survived the French Revolution and was passed on to Jean-Francois’s son and then to Chardin, another perfumer, who was appointed Napoleon III’s personal perfumer. In his book Memories of Saint-Helena, Victor Masson wrote that Napoleon’s wife Josephine was a devoted patron of Houbigant, and when her beloved husband lay dying, she had two of Houbigant’s perfumed pastilles burning in his bedroom. Other famous clients included Princess Adelaide d’Orleans in 1829, Queen Victoria of England in 1838, the Emperor Napoleon III in 1870, and the Tsar of Russia in 1890, all appointed Houbigant as their royal perfumer. In 1880, perfumer Paul Parquet inherited the Houbigant business and created some of its greatest perfumes. He is said to be the first perfumer who understood the importance of the new synthetic aroma chemicals. Le Parfum Idéal was created by Parquet for the 1900 World Fair and has been called an "imperishable model of perfume composition."
