Rare Icelandic Viking Archeology & History Book For offer is a rare copy of noted Viking scholar Kristjan Eldjarn's work entitled Kuml og Haugfe: Ur Heidnum sid a Islandi (Bokautgafn Nordi, 1956, Iceland). Dr. Eldjarn (1916-1982) was the 3rd President of Iceland from 1968-1980. He graduated in archaeology from the University of Copenhagen and taught at the University of Iceland. In 1957, he was awarded a doctorate for his research into pagan burials in Iceland. He became the Curator of the National Museum of Iceland in 1945, and its Director in 1947 -- a position he held until winning the 1968 Presidential Election. Even today, over 50 years since it's original publication, Eldjarn's treatise remains the seminal work cataloging and descriting the hundres of early medieval burial mounds, archaeological sites and finds that stand as testaments to Iceland's Viking Age past. The text is illustrated by many black and white picture of finds made in the hundreds of graves cataloged Pictures include everyday items like combs and whetstones, and some of the fantastic finds like the famous "dragon cross" of stirling silver. This book was a gift to me, years ago, while I was working on a Ph.D. in Viking Archeology at the University of Minnesota. It belonged to a noted scholar and some of his handwritten notes can be found on the inside back and front covers.
