Hi, thanks for taking a look.
Up today is a vintage stand made by the Uhl Art Steel Company of Toledo, Oh, later known as The Toledo Steel Furniture Company. No labels or tags indicate this, but the traditional Uhl footbrace and styling is in evidence, and I have seen enough of these to recognize the quality of craftsmanship exhibited by the Uhls. To begin with, I would like to state that I believe these pieces are undervalued...the stools and chairs of the Uhl Company have been increasing in demand and price, but these stands, which exhibit the same design qualities as the stools, seem to have been left undiscovered. The workmanship and quality of these pieces is stunning, as are the mechanisms used in their function which were designed from scratch by the Uhl company. But enough of that...'s the scoop The stand was probably originally designed as a typewriter (or other heavy calculating device) stand. Made of cold rolled steel for strength, it is of riveted construction, all rivets intact. Lever mechanism allows feet to be moved up or down, up raises the feet, allowing the stand to be rolled to its destination. Wheels are original steel encased fiber composition with bronze bearings. Solid quartered oak wood top. The main portion measures 19 3/4 inches wide by 12" deep, The additional leaf can be raised to add more surface area via a simple locking brace. Leaf measures just slightly smaller at 19 1/2" by 10 1/4". Top has been lightly sanded and given a wax and oil treatment, however it still retains its character from years of use. Height from floor is 26 3/4". When I found this it was painted all black. That paint has been removed(although traces do remain) to reveal the factory finish which is what the Uhl company termed Japanese Brass, which is a copper foundation with intermittent fields of black(see foto). The finish matches the finish of the stool I have listed at the moment, together they make a stunning pair. I have tried my best to preserve the original finish and patina. Steel has been given a thorough waxing in order to seal and protect finish. T may be a few traces of surface rust, nothing that detracts from its look or integrity. This was a typewriter stand. However it could now be anything from a side table to a bedside stand to a nice addition to a persons home office...how's that for salesmanship. That's all I know, reserve price is moderate, as I would rather keep this beauty than sell it for pennies, my apologies. Winning bidder has seven days to make good, item usually ships within two days of payment. Please ask all questions so you know what you are getting, I respond fairly quickly. Shipping is a little higher due to size. This one stays in the U. S. Have fun, Db70
