Hunter With Net

Beautiful signed Inuit-Eskimo soapstone sculpture from the Canadian Arctic.

This piece depicts an Eskimo man lying down, carrying a net with something in it (maybe a fish or otter).

This sculpture measures 9" long x 3.25" at its widest x 2.25" tall, and it weighs 2 pounds 9.5 ounces.

The sculpture is signed by the artist on the bottom (very hard to read ... maybe "Tulhossie Inuk" or something similar). It is also numbered on the bottom:

This piece is not dated, but may date to the 1970's - 1980's.

This is a very well carved and expressive soapstone sculpture of a hunter, which is a very common subject used in Inuit - Eskimo art.

The surface of the dark black-gray stone is highly polished and very smooth. The sculptural qualities are full and rounded, with inscribed details in the face and other areas.

The dark stone shows its natural textures and inclusions. The long jagged lines that look like cracks are the natural matrix of the stone and are original to the piece ... they do not represent damage and are stable.

This carving is in excellent condition, as shown in the photographs. T are some tiny chips and scratches to the surfaces and a long natural crack in the stone, visible under the man's neck (see photos). T are no losses to the piece.
