Today I am pleased to offer a museum quality Shoji Hamada Art Pottery textured and incised bowl. This is the finest example of his work I have seen. Not only is the finish amazing, but the craftmanship on this bowl is amazing. The exterior is covered with incised rings or striped threading with the exception of a band of textured marble like clay around the top also called the ame glaze. There is also an incised ring INSIDE the lip. The inner surface is coiled with more of the ame glaze or marble finish. This is truly a work of art and to see it you understand why he is considered a genious and has works are in museums the world over. Shoji Hamada went to Cornwall England in 1920 where he met lifelong friend and mentor Bernard Leach. After helping to set up the Leach Pottery in St Ives he returned to Japan to establish his own studio. He never signed a piece of pottery after establishing his studio. He opted to let his signature be the quality of the item. And once you know his work, it is something you will never forget. And this is an amazing example. It is 10 1/2 inches wide, 6 1/4 inches tall and 5 1/2 inches deep. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, crazing or repairs. FREE shipping within the continental US.
