Stunning vintage Japanese Butsudan, a Buddhist home shrine. This item was recently imported directly from Japan, and is 20-30 years old. It consists of four parts; a base, lower cabinet, upper cabinet, and top, finished with glowing lacquer in black, burgundy and gold. The main cabinet features inner, shoji-style doors and elaborate gilded wood carvings in a Pheonix and floral motif. Opening the inner doors reveals the "palace", or inner sanctum of the shrine, which is ornately decorated with gilded wood carvings of flowers, birds and Buddhist deities. The carvings and gold leaf of the inner sanctum are in very good condition. The main cabinet also has a lacquered pull-out shelf. The lower cabinet houses two drawers, as well a storage space with sliding doors. The lacquer on the exterior of the shrine shows some fading due to age and use, particularly the gold accents (see photos), but overall the condition of the shrine is quite good. T are three spaces for hanging Gohonzon (Buddhist worship scrolls), which each measure approximately 14" tall by 5" wide, though some of the height is obscured from view by the eaves of the palace carving.
