Vintage Bustsudan, approximately 20 to 30 years old, recently importeddirectly from Japan. Butsudan are Buddhist shrines used for worshipceremonies, common to homes in Japan. This shrine is constructed of a combination of solid wood and hardwood veneer plywood, lacquered to a deep red hue. It consists of two pieces: A base measuring approximately 20 inches tall by 23 inches wide by 19 inches deep; and the main cabinet measuring 37 inches tall and equal depth and width. The base features two lacquered drawers and a storage space with sliding doors. It is a slightly different hue of red than the main cabinet, likely a result of varying exposure to sunlight. The main cabinet features inner doors with wood carvings in a pheonix and floral motif. The doors and carvings are in very good condition. The inner sanctum, or palace, is also ornately decorated with wood carvings of flowers and Shi Shi. T is a space for hanging Gohonzon which measures 15 inches tall by 21 inches wide. The inner sanctum also has a storage space with sliding doors, as well as a pull-out shelf. Overall, the condition of this item is good for it's age. T is some dulling of the lacquer due to age, as well as the aforementioned difference in hue in the two pieces. T is also some minor delamination on the top. I have tried to take many detailed pictures. I will do my best to answer any questions regarding the item. I am not, however, an expert in the different sects of Buddhism.
