Stunning vintage Buddhist home shrine, or Butsudan, recently imported directly from Japan. This item is approximately 20-30 years old, and is in good to excellent condition. It consists of four parts: A base measuring 5 1/2" tall by 28 1/2" wide by 20" deep; a lower cabinet measuring 13" tall by 26" wide by 19" deep; the main cabinet, also 26w x 19d, standing 43"; and a 4" tall top, the same depth and width as the base. The entire assembled unit stands 65 1/2 inches, and is finished with glowing lacquer in black, burgundy and gold. The finish is in good condition, with a few minor dings and incense dust from use and some dulling of the lacquer due to age. The base features a single drawer, and the lower cabinet has three drawers, which are hidden behind doors that slide up and back into the unit. The main cabinet features inner, shoji-style doors and elaborate gilded wood carvings in a Pheonix and floral motif. Opening the inner doors reveals the "palace", or inner sanctum of the shrine, which is ornately decorated with gilded wood carvings of flowers, birds and dragons. T is a space for hanging Gohonzon (Buddhist worship scrolls) which measures approximately 20" by 20", though some of the height is obscured from view by the eaves of the palace carving. All the carvings are in excellent condition. The thin metal adornments are also in good condition, though some oxidation is evident as a result of the copper alloy they are fashioned from.
