The Vintage Jewellery Co. Victorian Carved Bog Oak Brooch Rare Victorian bog oak brooch. This brooch is beautifully crafted from finely carved bog oak. The bog oak is carved into a finely detailed harp, with star detailing at the top and shamrocks down the side. Bog Oak is fossilised Wood and is also known as 'Bog Wood'. Bog Oak is made of Oak trees which has been preserved in the peat bogs of Ireland for thousands of years. This piece would have been carved during the Victorian era, circa 1850. Bog oak jewellery items were also commonly used as mourning pieces, because of their intense black colouring and deep carvings. In excellent condition! Weighs 3 grams. Measures 3cm x 2.1cm.
