DESCRIPTION: SOME HISTORY OF THE LEO BELGICUS-----Quoting From Wikipeda---"Leo Belgicus", Latin for Belgian Lion or Dutch Lion (see below), is a map of the Low Countries (the Netherlands and Belgium) drawn in the shape of a lion. The earliest Leo Belgicus was drawn by the Austrian cartographer Michael Aitzinger in 1583, when the Netherlands were fighting the Eighty Years' War for independence. The motif was inspired by the heraldic figure of the lion, occurring in the coats of arms of several of the Dutch provinces, as well as in those of William of Orange. Aitzinger's map was the first of many. T were three different designs. In the most common one, the lion's head located was in the northeast of the country and the tail in the southeast. The most famous version is that of Claes Janszoon Visscher, which was published in 1609 on the occasion of the Twelve Years' Truce. A less common design reversed the position of the lion, as shown in the Leo Belgicus by Jodocus Hondius. The third version was published in the later stages of the war, and after the independence of the Dutch Republic was confirmed in the Peace of Westphalia (1648). It is called the Leo Hollandicus, the Holland Lion, and shows only the province of Holland. One of the earliest versions was published by Visscher around 1625". THIS IS A STUNNING MAP. I AM NOT A CARTOGRAPHER SO MY KNOWLEGE OF MAPS IS LIMITED. Using my Knowlege of Book plates and printing, The "CHAIN-MARKS" as well as the "WATERMARK" AND TYPE OF PAPER ARE ALL T GIVING IT THE LOOK AND FEEL OF A FEW HUNDRED YEAR OLD DOCUMENT. I am inclined to believe that this is more than likely 18th Century type of Paper. (Many have emailed who agree with this age) IT IS STUNNING AND IT WILL LOOK GREAT FRAMED IN YOUR DEN OR ANY IMPORTANT ROOM THAT YOU WISH TO PLACE IT IN. T HAVE BEEN MANY EMAILS TELLING ME TO UPDATE MY ORIGINAL DISCRIPTION SINCE IT PROBABLY WAS NOT FROM THE "WORLD ON PAPER" BOOK SINCE T ARE NO FOLDS OR CREASES! I AM WAITING FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF THE WATERMARK FROM A FELLOW WHO EMAILED FROM HOLLAND SO I CAN HOPEFULLY GET SOME SORT IF ID FOR YOU REAL CARTOGRAPRHER'S. The Difficult part to explain about this Great map is "De Wereld op Papier 1967" under Leo Belgicus. Very Weird. I cannot find anything on the Web. Not another one Like it. I have many search hours into it. MANY Similar ones, but nothing Exactly like it. This is Definately a RARE MAP! The FULL Map Indicates the Actual Color the best. I tried to Adjust some of the images to get some detail from my inadequate camera. It helped a little but it gives the appearance of the actual Map being too Black.
