These two bottles are unopened and in great shape . is a portion of a qualifying letter from P eter Reutter, The Authority on Madeira Wine in the United States. Dear Steven, thank you for your email with the wonderful pictures of the old Madeira wine bottles. Since the are both bottlings by a private importing company (and not by one of the established shippers/producers on the island of Madeira), it is hard to tell anything about these two bottles. What I can say from the labels is, that both wines are very probably blended wines, rather intended for everyday consumption. "Old Southside" usually describes a medium-dry to medium-sweet and rather light style of Madeira wine. The other label has V.R. on it, probably for "Velha Reserva" meaning old reserve, so this indicates no style of wine, but rather a higher quality of the wine. However t is no hint of a vintage year, su as I said these are blended wines for everyday consumption. The imported was located in Boston, Mass., one of the main trading places for imported Madeira wine at these times. It was common that the wines were imported in bulk and later bottled by the importing company. From the pictures of the bottles one bottle seems to be a so-called three-part-mold, the other is an early industrial make with a so-called Owens-ring at the bottom.
