This store is a collection of vintage perfume bottles from the estate of Marie-Louise Fredyma, my mother who passed away in 2010 after nearly 70 years in the antique business. Marie's perfumes were a special place in her collection of antiques and vintage items and are now offered for sale as part of her estate. Description: Vintage Mary Chess White Lilac Cologne 1932 Bottle/Box. Bottle is sealed, unopened, and full. Bottle is marked 4 ounces.Box is gold in color and has pattern of small squares with label on front "Toilet Water Mary Chess New York White Lilac Net Contents 4 Ozs." Background: Established in 1932 by Grace Mary Chess Robinson on Park Avenue, small shop opened in 1933. Became a very important perfumer after she introduced "Chess Pieces" in 1938. These figural perfume bottles were in the shape of chess pieces, an artful play on her name. Mary Chess used only natural ingredients in her perfumes, and her first perfume was White Lilac.Just after World War II and continuing into the 1960s, a selection of Mary Chess perfumes was sold in glass bottles shaped like chess pieces. Though expensive, these sets proved popular. The Wheaton Glass Company of Millville, New Jersey produced the glass bottles and pressed figural stoppers for Mary Chess from 1946 to 1948.
