Two vintage New York restaurant matchbooks Benny Leonard Restaurnt Matchbook is a Lion 15-stick Feature. ( Measures 1.5” x 2” closed) Rare Rivoli Restaurant Matchbook is a Lion 21-stick Feature. (Measures 2" x 2" closed) Benny Leonard (born Benjamin Leiner ; “ Ghetto Wizard” April 17, 1896 – April 18, 1947) was an American lightweight boxer . He was named as number 8 on Ring Magazine's list of the 80 Best Fighters of the Last 80 Years and number 7 on ESPN 's 50 Greatest Boxers of All-Time. Measures closed 1.5” x 2” Benny Leonard had little success in the restaurant business, and his matchbooks are quite difficult to find. Leonard was as good as they get; He was quick and shifty, clever and game, could box and punch – and was super smart; Benny spoke softly but hit hard and had great “savvy” for a foe’s movements; He was one of the all-time great lightweights and pound-for-pound fighters that ever entered the ring. In 1943, Leonard became a licensed New York State Athletic Commission referee and died in the ring at St. Nicholas Arena after refereeing a full card in the stifling little Columbus Ave. club.
