Here is a wonderful and rare piece of WW1 history. This medal was struck in the US to commemorate the voyage of the German submarine the Deutschland to Baltimore MD in 1916. The US continued to trade with Germany until we entered the war in 1917. The Deutschland was sent to the US with chemicals and dyes that our industry needed and could no longer get easily. We sent back metals and materials that the Germans needed. This sub made two trips before being taken over and armed for the war effort. The purpose of the voyage was to run the blockade that the English and the French had established to stop German merchant ships carrying cargo. The Captain on this first voyage was Paul Konig who wrote a book about his wartime adventures. There is lots more information about this first voyage and the wartime fate of the sub online if you type in the sub's name in any search engine. This medal was made to commemorate its first voyage in 1916 to Baltimore. The medal is made of Iron in the shape of the German war cross. On the front is a small brass medal or coin with Capt Konig's likeness. On the back is another medal with an outline of the submarine encircled with lots of writing.
