VINTAGE MENE BRONZESCULPTURE HUNTING DOG STALKING!!!
Up for your consideration is a fine statue of a dog stalking its prey. It is solid bronze on a marble base and heavy! It is signed Â"MeneÂ" for Pierre Jules Mene (1810-1871), a listed French artist. Mene was a prolific sculptor and was seen in his day as a follower of Barye, another well known animalier. This statue is one of the dogs from one of MeneÂ's best know groups. It was exhibited in wax at the 1848 Salon and again in bronze two years later. The dog is known as Â"Tac, the pointerÂ" (in English) as a single subject, but is also recognized as one of the two dogs in Â"Chasse a la PerdrixÂ". The other dog in that group is a retriever. Tac is very expressive and looks intent on getting his prey! Mene is listed in Â"The AnimaliersÂ" by James Mackay, BermanÂ's Â"Bronzes, sculptors & FoundersÂ", and in Â"Animals in BronzeÂ" by Christopher Payne as well as in many other bronze sculpture reference books. I am unsure of the age of the piece. It doe not appear to be an original casting from the 1800Â's. It was probably cast some time after 1930Â's. It does appear to have some age to it. The sculpture is 12Â" long, 5.25Â" high and 4.75Â" wide at the base. It weighs just over 10 pounds! The front left corner of the marble base has been cracked and repaired and does not detract from the beauty of the piece. The bronze statue itself is in very good condition with minor rubbing to high points. It displays very nicely and would look great on your desk or fireplace! |
