Vintage Menu 20th Century Limited Railroad New York Central
Please Note: You may notice a slight uneven tone on the front and back covers. This is because of the lighting of the photograph and does not appear in person, rather it is very even. This rare and desirable vintage menu is from the 20th Century Limited, part of the New York Central System "Road To The Future". Menu comes with a bonus A La Carte Service page insert. Menu is from late 1950's or early 1960's. The cover of this menu features the 20th Century Limited logo, with "New York Central" underneath. T is a staple in the upper right hand corner from the Nectarose wine card which is stapled on the inside of the menu. The inside left of the menu has the 20th Century Limited logo at the top of the page. Stapled over this is a pink and cream ad card for Nectarose wine, half-bottle $2.00. This side of the menu offers Custom-Mixed Century Cocktails (Dry Beefeater Martini, $1.25); Starters include Rosetted Radishes; Spiced Watermelon Rind; Canapes of Sardines. Dinners include: Grilled Jumbo Lake Whitefish, 5.25; Fresh Calf's Liver Saute, $5.50. Also included with dinners: Maraschino Cherry Sticks; French Bread; Salad; Dessert and After Dinner Mints. The right side of the menu offers: The Century Steak Dinner (Selected Sirloin Steak With French Mushrooms) and Recommended by Our Chef: Casserole of Shrimp and Crab Meat or Roast Prime Ribs Of Beef--$5.95 set price. The bottom of the menu mentions: A La Carte Menu will be presented upon request (included in this auction); Sugar Substitute Available, please ask waiter; American Express Credit Cards Welcomed--ask the steward for your application; A.H. Smith, Manager Dining and Sleeping Car Service--466 Lexington Avenue, New York 17, N.Y.. The back of the menu has the New York Central System logo with "Road To The Future" below. The BONUS A La Carte Service Menu offers appetizers (Cup of Soup, 45 cents; Spiced Watermelon Rind, 50 cents; Canapes of Imported Caviar (Beluga), $1.95; Shrimp Cocktail Lorenzo, $1.50); Entrees (Charcoal Broiled Lamb Chops, $4.50; Home Made Roast Beef Hash, $3.30); Sandwiches (Century Club, $2.25; Imported Sardine Sandwich, $1.50); Desserts (Pie, Shortcake or Cobbler, 50 cents); and Drinks (Coffee, pot, 50 cents). Menu measures 10 7/8 inches x 8 1/2 inches. It is in excellent condition for age. T is minor discoloration on the interior of menu due to age. A La Carte menu measures 11 inches x 8 1/2 inches --the upper left hand corner was bent at some point, t is minor discoloration due to age--two small spots on the front and t are some spots on the blank back of the menu insert, someone also calculated-in blue ink--8.90-1.80=7.10.
