This is a superb vintage majolica faience pate dish in the form of a mallard drake duck. It was made by Michel Cougant of Brittany in France in the 1980's. It has only ever sat in my Gran's glass cabinet and so in in excellent condition. The duck is shown sitting and the top half of his body lifts off to allow pate to be stored inside. It's made of lovely majolica pottery. The duck's body is pea green with yellow and black detail. The head is dark green with white and brown bands down the neck and onto the breast. Dark yellow beak with yellow and black eyes There is a moulded detail to the feathers on the duck's back. Measuring 8 ins. long and just over 4.5 tall at the head. The base bears the Michel Caugant back stamp which says 'cette piece en faience, a ite extieremen realisee a la main. Je vous la propose en exclusivite' followed by Michel Caugant's signature and translates as, 'This real faience piece is made entirely by hand. I offer it to you exclusively'. These pieces were sold all over the world and full of pate in shops such as Harrods. They are no longer produced and have become sought after collectors pieces. This piece was bought by my Gran and it dates to the early 1980's In beautiful condition with no cracks or chips etc. see photo for closer inspection.
