This is a vintage H. Miller acetylene gas bicycle lamp.It measures 16 cm high x 9 cm diameter for the front lens. The front has a glass lens, and there are two green glass 'Jewels' on either side. The H. Miller 'Lighthouse' enblem is stamped on the top of the reflector housing. The wording: Model 4A H. Miller & Co. Ltd Birmingham is stamped in the spring loaded bicycle support. The base carries the inscription 'Do not fill above this line'. The lamp is in exceptionally fine condition for its age. There are the inevitable carbide deposits in the lower chamber and some blackening of the reflector caused by the acetylene flame. There is slight tarnishing of the steel lens surround. Everything seems to be in good order, these lamps functioned by the production of calcium carbide pellets dropped into water held into the lower chamber. I believe, that the calcium carbide pellets can still be obtained from good camping/outdoor pursuit shops (acetylene gas lamps are apparently the favoured illumination for many cavers). I haven't tried, but, if required, there seems no reason why the lamp should not still operate. Thank for looking !
