Vintage Native American made Primitive Thunderbird Brooch in Sterling Silver & Turquoise Estate family heirloom: Navajo made primitive tribal made Thunderbird brooch belonged to my 75 year old business partner's grandmother. We think it dates to the early 1900s at least and may be older as it shows evidence that the original latch has been replaced. Very old primitive tribal stamping along a simple bench cut brooch design with a small turquoise cabochon set in the middle of the Thunderbird Earliest forms of Native American made jewelry date to the mid to late 1800s, beginning with the Navajo in 1853 Early tribal jewelry was made of primitive bench cut silver stamped with tribal marking and / or sacred animals Brooch is 2 1/4" wide X 3/4" height at broadest point RARE Collector item is still wearable and would look great with any western wear or rodeo fashion Would make a great scarf pin, lapel pin, tie pin, or brooch for dress or vest ------ About latches: "Prior to 1900 or so, brooches had a simple "C" catch with no locking mechanism, and the pin often extended out beyond the "C" far enough to weave back into clothing for security.
