You are bidding on a gorgeous piece of Vintage (nearly antique) Moriage Dragonware made by Noritake / Morimura Brothers between 1913 and 1921 (per the information found below). I bought it at a Dallas estate sale of a former G.I. who purchased it while stationed t around WWII. It stands 4 ½" tall, is black with a gray dragon, and has a luster interior and gold handle. It is in wonderful condition with no apparent cracks or chips. This is a relisting of an earlier listing I had in which I dated this piece during 1940s Occupied Japan . At the request of an initial bidder, I did a bit more research to clearly identify the maker's mark on this piece. The other Dragonware pieces I currently have on auction have a mark that reads "The Hinode - Japan ," so I made an assumption (perhaps incorrectly) that all of the pieces were purchased together and at the same time and place. (I'll never know for sure since I purchased them at an estate sale.) I have discovered that the piece is actually pre-WWII and was manufactured by Noritake/Morimura Brothers between 1913 and 1920. is some documentation to back this up. "MM Wreath "Hand Painted Japan " red stamp mark - circa 1913-1920" with a photograph of the exact same mark as on this piece (/orientalcats/marks.html#hinode) "The earliest pieces of Noritake china bear the back stamp of the letter "M" encircled by a wreath, with the words "Hand painted." Pieces made prior to 1921 also bear the word " Nippon " (which simply means " Japan "). After 1921, adhering to changes in U.S. laws regarding imports, " Japan " or "Made in Japan " can be found beneath the back stamp of these later pieces of Noritake china." (/noritake_china_history.htm) "For the period from the end of World War II in 1945 through April 28, 1952 , the United States and its Allies occupied Japan . Noritake wares from circa 1948 to 1952 may bear a number of marks including "Made in Occupied Japan " and "Occupied Japan ." It was also lawful to mark items just "Japan" or "Made in Japan " during this period, thus all products made in the occupied country do not necessarily bear the tell-tale identification."
