All Original 1950's Herbert Johnson Motor Racing Helmet with Rain Shield, in Excellent Condition. If you are familiar with these helmets t is little introduction needed. If you are not, you may first want to read this article by Racer and Author Denise McCluggage called "What We Wore Then.": /apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080711/FREE/825168318/1543/50thanne

Around we used to joke these helmets were made from an element called "Unobtainium" since they are so rare and expensive. Juan Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss, Carroll Shelby, Mike Hawthorn and many other great drivers all wore Herbert Johnson helmets at one time or another, and to this day they remain the most sought after helmets in the world.

At the 2009 Bonhams Auction at Goodwood a Herbert Johnson helmet once worn by Stirling Moss sold for an amazing 23,000 GBP. In U.S. dollars that's $36,682.50!

Now, this particular helmets' provenience is not fully known. We do know, however, it was used by a professional sports car driver during the 1950's. But, one of the things that makes it so special is that it is completely original from that driver and is in remarkable condition for having never been touched since. It has original paint, leather, material, etc.. The hardwear and snaps all work as they should. The leather is supple and without cracks, and the buckles work excellent. The rain shield is in excellent condition and amazingly clear for its age. The Herbert Johnson label still has its plastic protection cover over it, and the webbing is very clean. The only "modification" the driver made was stitching on the "lucky side" of a wishbone in front. This wishbone is a valuable clue to its origin if someone cared to try and research who the driver was. The shell itself is solid with no cracks anyw, and the original shellac-soaked material can be seen in the areas w the original paint has come off. This helmet may not be tied to a famous driver like Sir Stirling and worth $36K+, but it will be a solid investment for anyone at this price. You just cannot go wrong. It is also the perfect candidate for restoration, should one care to do that. Personally, I would just treat the leather and display it in a glass case, but you may have other plans. It's up to you. Happy bidding & thank you for your time.

Oh yes, it is a size large (23" +/- 1/8")
