This old vintage brooch was made to look like its cameo component was carved from shell, but the consensus is that it is some kind of faux material, perhaps a molded thermoset plastic. Whatever it is, the detail certainly was not spared! The cameo part is set in a large, pierced gilt and white enamel setting, which is strange in that all of the pin parts on back are also coated with the same white paint; so i don't know if someone altered it on their own, or if the setting was made this way originally. The piece measures 2 1/4" long and 2 1/4" in width, being symmetrical. In addition to the safety clasp pin back, t is a large loop bale or ring, so this can be worn on a ribbon or chain. Its maximum depth is 1/2", and it weighs a hefty 24.6 grams! Maybe the setting is wrought iron! It reminds me of those fancy balcony rails in the French Quarter of New Orleans....very baroque! The deep coral and off-beige parts of the cameo look very nice against the white enamel setting, which also is accented with gilt highlights. The scene portrayed in the cameo is a tender one, of a darling little winged cupid, giving his mother, Aphrodite ( also known as Venus, the Goddess of Love), a bouquet of flowers! Aphrodite is seated in a lovely garden, with trees in the background. Directly behind her, another small figure appears to be climbing down a ladder or trellis... but i can see no wings on this little urchin, although he is the same size as Cupid. The myth goes the Hermes, or Mercury, was the father of Cupid, so i guess that is w cupid got his wings.... Hermes was usually portrayed with his wings on his helmet, as he was the messenger of the gods...or was he a god himself? .... uh-oh...what is that AARP hotline number?? why would Aphrodite, the goddess of love, mate with a messenger boy? Oh well, stranger things have happened... remember, the postman always rings twice! Thank you for your interest!
