ITALIAN BRASS & MARBLE APOTHECARY SCALES This is a set of apothecary scales in brass with a black, white and tan mottled square marble two-tier base with four brass feet, useful and decorative. The scales measure 24-1/2" high from the floor to the very pointed brass tip at the top. The two brass pans measure 7-1/2" across on each. The chains are brass also with a very unique design on them. T are three chains for each pan with three sections to them. Each set of chains is topped with a brass hook bracket that holds them (equals two). This bracket has three hooks on which they hang. At the very top t is an ornate brass bracket that holds the two hooks. That piece holds the three chains for each side and measures almost 14" across and almost 6-1/4" high. T are two nice cut-out heart designs in the middle on each side. AT THE TOP OF THAT BRACKET IS A BEAUTIFUL SOLID PIECE (see picture). This set of scales were sent to my parents as a Christmas present from Italy over 50 years ago from my sister and brother-in-law. Underneath the bottom of the marble it says: "MADE IN ITALY" The long ribbed shaft that attaches to the marble is shiny although t are a few tiny dark spots just inside some of the thin vertical grooves. The brass is not in perfect condition. The pans are pitted and t but not pitted through. One of the pans has three small splits on the very edge. THESE FLAWS DON'T REALLY SHOW UNLESS IN BRIGHT LIGHTS OR SUNLIGHT. When the room is not bright you have to purposely walk up to it and look to see them. Perhaps someone knows how to clean this brass up but looking at the whole thing sitting on the fireplace hearth, for instance, (this is w my mother had hers because they didn't use the fireplace) most of the imperfections don't really show. For decorative purposes, you could put silk flowers in the pans, etc. The marble is in fantastic condition. No cracks, chips or pits that I can see. If you should have any qestions, please ask. Thanks very much.
