Up for auction is a lovely vintage oval basket with a lid woven by one of the skilled weavers of the Charleston, SC area. I love the shape and the decorative dark "knots" woven around the perimeter. When you visit Charleston, you can still see the ladies selling their handwoven baskets of all shapes and sizes. This basket would have been advertised as a purse or tote basket or possibly a sewing basket. The basket would have been sold to a tourist lady in the middle years of the 20th century. It features a graceful arching handle; and an oval lid with a little hinge at the back, cleverly made by elongating part of the weave and interweaving the pieces. The front has a little latching mechanism, all made of sweetgrass bound with palmetto. This attractive basket makes a beautiful piece for display or could still be used for its original purpose.
The basket is a nice medium size for one of this type, measuring 9½" x 7" across at the base and 5" deep - 12" to the top of the handle. It is in great shape for its age. As you can see from the photos, t are several missing wraps on one of the coils of the handle and several more throughout, but they don't interfere with this basket's awesome display quality. None of the coils are frayed through, and the rest of the basket is in nice shape, with the little hinges and latch still in working condition. See photos, as they give a true picture of the basket's condition. The basket is old enough that the palmetto wraps have lost their greenish color and turned a golden brown with age.
