We are currently assisting in the downsizing of a 'young-at-heart lady's' estate. Much of what you will see here belonged to her mother who was put to rest over 25 years ago; some items belonged to her father who was put to rest more recently. Items displayed here have been in the family's possession for many, many decades and while we are not experts, we believe them to be authentic as described to us. Presented here is an unusual find! A round, brass box with an airedale terrier keeping watch atop; when it is opened four glass ashtrays with brass trim are found inside! Someone suggested it might also have been used for tea bags. The outside of the box was painted a burgundy color at one time, but it is now chipped and peeling. Measures approximately 3" in diameter and stands up 3.25" tall including the airedale. Has felt on the bottom; ashtrays are 2.25" in diameter. On the very bottom rim in the back is etched: " GERMANY / GES / GESCH. ". From our research we've discovered "Ges Gesch" is apparently the German abbreviation for "patent approved." The fact that this piece is marked GERMANY would indicate pre-World War II.
