This listing is for a striking pair of 11 3/4" tall Oriental porcelain bird figurines purchased from the Dallas Estate of a diplomat who had lived in China for a number of years and had collected Oriental art in every category. I fell in love with these immediately although I will be the first to admit I know absolutely nothing about this area of collecting. They have a wonderful "soft" painted appearance with a glaze similar to that found on Chinese mud men which achieved their look by being fired at a very low temperature. I will describe this pair to the best of my ability and I have included lots of photos so you can be your own judge to their attributes. I believe the birds are meant to be stylistic "Phoenix" birds which was a popular subject matter for decoration in 18th and 19th Century China. The color palate used on these two lovely bird figures is a brick red/orange, yellow and mottled blues, greens and browns. The birds are standing on a tree stump with their colorful tails wrapped around in front. Each figure weighs slightly over two pounds and the porcelain body is 1/4" thick. There are no chips, cracks or repairs on the pair although there is some slight wear on the red painted wings and the area over their beaks. There is a firing hole on the back of each bird which is often found on porcelain figures from the 19th Century. I have no knowledge of the age of these birds but definitely believe them to be older figures. One is marked with an incised "H K C 814" and the other is marked "H K C 818" on the inside.
