Vintage Panama Railroad Screw-Type Track Spike DESCRIPTION This is a vintage unique screw-type track spike from the Panama Railroad in the former U.S. Panama Canal Zone. The screw-type spike was developed and used during the early construction period of the Panama Canal (1904 to 1914). At that time, lignum vitae (ironwood), one of the densest woods known, was used for the railroad ties. The wood is so hard and heavy that it will actually sink in water. Because of the extreme hardness of the ironwood, the ties had to be bored to accept the screw-type spike, which held the rails in place. The screw-type spike is an authentic souvenir of the Panama Railroad and the Canal Zone and is a rare collector's item. This screw-type spike is displayed on a polished piece of lignum vitae wood and measures 6 1/2" long x 5" wide x 3 3/4" high. The bottom of the ironwood section is covered with a piece of felt to protect the surface of any furniture w the heavy piece might be displayed. The display comes with a small pamphlet that authenticates this unique type of railroad equipment. CONDITION The Panama Railroad screw-type spike resting on its ironwood base is in excellent condition and is ready for display in a collection of railroad spikes or rail tools and equipment.
