“The Spratling of Peru ” … Florentine-born, Graziella Laffi lived and worked in Peru during the 1950’s, producing singular and stunning silver pieces in both modern and pre-Columbian forms. Most aficionados believe that her creations rival the masterworks that came out of Mexico . She is one of today’s hottest collectibles in the field. Winsome, whimsical, and wonderful, this unusually large and hefty pin is an outstanding example of Laffi at her imaginative best. Depicting the proverbial, but highly stylized scared cat—ears perked, eyes popping, teeth bared, hair on end, and tail coiled—the slightly convex piece boasts sublime dimension and detail. All of Laffi’s signature techniques are on display , including minimalist tool work, surmounted silver elements, mottled green enameling for the eyes, and meticulous cutwork {note the cat’s serrated, bristled “fur” and splendidly defined feet}. It makes for exceptional wearable art, as well as a distinctive addition to any Graziella Laffi silver collection. Hallmarks: PERU , G. LAFFI , 925 . Dimensions: 2-3/4” x 1-7/8”. Weight: 25.5 grams. Condition: Dating to the 1950’s, it is in excellent vintage condition, with a rollover-locking clasp. ~ SUGGESTED READING BEFORE BID!
