Wow! Without question this is one of the finest old photo albums I've ever put on eBay , and I've sold quite a few.
This one is packed with more than 450 vintage photos that completely document the lives of the Musilek family, who lived outside the little town of Colome, South Dakota , which is about 150 miles west of Sioux Falls. Most of the photos are from the early 1900s and depict just about every phase of rural and small-town life, extending through the 1920s and early 1930s. Men, women, boys, girls. Some of the photos have handwritten captions, either written directly on the black pages, or scribbled on a tag glued below the picture. And boy, t is something for everybody, including: A man showing off a very early model Harley-Davidson (rare single-cylinder model) inside a bicycle shop. Sod houses on the plains. Family members posed around a 1920s Standard Oil gas station (apparently they owned it). Cowboys with rifles. Men visiting a town wearing skis after the "Blizzard of 1915"). One-room schoolhouse (the sign on front says "Nixon School, District 48"). Children with dolls and pets, including a girl holding up her two pet rabbits. U.S. Army soldiers at a camp during World War I (several pages of these, lots of snow on the ground). Man with his pet monkey. Children posing with a nun. Car wreck. Postman on horseback (making his last round, according to the caption) Football players and lettermen (with "C" on their sweaters). Houses completely covered with dirt after a dust storm. Cemeteries and a funeral in progress. A house being moved across the plains on two old trucks (sign on house: "Morganfield Bros. House Moving"). Barns, houses, livestock, windmills, sheep, ponies, and more. Obituaries and clippings pasted and t, including one about a schoolboy in India swallowed by a python ! Take a look at the scans. I tried to show as much as I could, but eBay only allows 12 scans, so e-mail me if you need more details about a specific subject or image. Very good condition. A whopping 140 pages (70 pages with photos attached front and back). The photos themselves are very good, with just a bit of aging/fading and t The album measures 7 by11 inches and is almost 2 inches thick. All the photos are securely attached with those little black corners, or are glued in. Most of the images are the standard 3 x 5 inches, or smaller. I think you can get a good idea of their size from the scans. T are maybe 20 places w photos are missing, but that still leaves you with more than 450 images. At the back of the book are several pages with newspaper clippings from the early 1930s about ice storms, President Roosevelt, and other news. Six blank pages at the very end. The pages are that thick black paper typically used for photo albums, but except for some bumped corners, they are still flexible and in good shape. The album has a brown embossed cardboard cover which has a few scuffed areas across the front. Everything is held together very securely with a pair of brass threaded fasteners.
