Offered for auction is this attractive Vintage Pottery Console Bowl measuring approx. 11 ½" across and 2 ½" deep and marked... ROYAL HICKMANU.S.A. Piece is in great condition with only one small flaw that I would not have noticed had I not been looking very closely;it has a very small chip at the edge of the rim that extends into a 3/8 th inch hairline crack (see photo) Note: I don't know at what point in Hickman's career this console bowl was made and will have to leave it to the bidders to validate the worth of this piece. Since it is not numbered, could that mean it is one of his earliest pieces? Below is some Royal Hickman history gleaned from the internet ... "Royal Hickman was born in Oregon in 1893 and worked as a designer for Californian and European potteries before coming to Haeger Potteries to create the Royal Haeger line which continues today. The success of the Royal Haeger line prompted the company to hire additional name designers to broaden their creative reach. Hickman left the company in 1944 but continued to work for Haeger as well as other manufacturers such as Heisey into the 1950s." "mid-20th century collectible--Royal Hickman pottery" "Royal Hickman sold most of his pottery from his own store in Tampa, Fla." "Royal Hickman pottery is becoming a popular collectible because it hasn't been made under that name since the 1950s." "In 1949, Royal Hickman, one of America's leading ceramic designers, moved to Clearwater Beach from Chattanooga, Tennessee planning on retirement. Hickman found himself very bored, purchased some land in Tampa; out on Nebraska Avenue and started Royal Hickman Limited. The Tampa plant produced some of Hickman's best ceramic designs. The pottery is marked on the base, 'ROYAL HICKMAN, FLORIDA' or with a paper label."
