DETAILS OF ITEM This piece measures 3.5 inches high and 5 inches wide at the widest point. Ema, which means a picture of a horse in Japanese, was originally that, a wooden board with a painted picture of a horse. People wrote their wishes and prayers on the Ema and presented it to the shrine or the temple. Although in the beginning people presented actual horses when they made a wish, over the years people came to present pictures of horses instead. Today, Ema with other motifs are often used to make wishes as well. The motif of this piece is a Japanese calligraphy character that reads "heart" together with the sturdy lock. It suggests a strong decision not to be attempted or swayed by something that your heart desires. This locked heart design that is used with an Ema board is the symbol of a vow or pledge not to drink again. This piece originated from Senkoji temple of Onomichi, Hiroshima of Japan. Senkoji was founded in the year 806 and is the 10th site of the Chugoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage. The main deity read more
