Mechanical tin and celluloid toy. Approximately 12" long.Early tin and celluloid depiction of an energetic dog chasing a mischievous cat that has just stolen the family's fish dinner! Dog and cat chase each other around a colorfully decorated tin dog kennel that cleverly conceals the clockwork mechanism. The kennel house is marked with the words "MADE IN JAPAN" on the side (refer to photos).Windup motor works. When wound the dog chases the cat in one direction until the cat turns and chases the dog briefly. Figures are attached to the fragile wire frame with a swivel device that allows the figures to pivot easily and smoothly. I marvel that this toy was intended for use by small children. It requires a good deal of dexterity to correctly align and insert the two wire frames into the drive attachment atop the dog house. Additionally the dog should be connected to the upper portion of the frame and the cat to the lower portion since it seems the upper portion controls the dominant figure. If the cat is attached to the upper portion it will appear to chase the dog!!This example comes complete with original box consisting of a box bottom and lid. The box bottom is secured at the four corners with metal staples. The staples are intact and holding - very solid bottom.
