Artist, the dominating figure of early 20th-c art, born in Málaga, S Spain. He studied at Barcelona and Madrid, and in 1901 set up a studio in Montmartre, Paris. His blue period (19024), a series of striking studies of the poor in haunting attitudes of despair and gloom, gave way to the gay, life-affirming pink period (19046), full of harlequins, acrobats, and the incidents of circus life. He then turned to brown, and began to work in sculpture. His break with tradition came with Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (19067, New York), the first exemplar of analytical Cubism, a movement which he developed with Braque (190914). From 1917 he became associated with Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, designing costumes and sets. His major creation is Guernica (1937, Madrid), expressing in synthetic Cubism his horror of the bombing of this Basque town during the Civil War. During World War 2 he was mostly in Paris, and after the liberation joined the communists. A great innovator, he also illustrated classical texts, and experimented in sculpture, ceramics, and lithography. The Museu Picasso was opened in Málaga in 2003. Artist, born in Vitebsk, NE Belarus. He studied at St Petersburg and Paris, left Russia in 1922, and settled near Paris. During World War 2 he moved to the USA, where he began to design ballet sets and costumes. He illustrated several books, but is best known for his paintings of animals, objects, and people from his life, dreams, and Russian folklore. The word Surrealist is said to have been coined by Apollinaire to describe the work of Chagall. THE HISTORY OF THE NATIONAL GALLERY IN PRAUGE...dates back to the 18th century. It began on February 5, 1796, when a group of prominent representatives of Bohemian patriotic aristocracy and Enlightened middle-class intellectuals decided to elevate what they called "debased artistic taste" of the local population. Their Society of Patriotic Friends of Arts founded two important institutions which had not existed in Prague to date: the Academy of Arts and a picture gallery for the general public. The Picture Gallery of the Society of Patriotic Friends of Arts became a direct predecessor of the National Gallery in Prague. In 1902, another significant institution was established - the Modern Gallery of the Kingdom of Bohemia - a private foundation of Emperor Franz Josef I. The Modern Gallery began to amass a collection of the twentieth-century Czech art. In 1918, the Picture Gallery of the Society of Patriotic Friends of Arts became a central collection of newly formed Czechoslovakia. Vincenc Kramá who was appointed its director in 1919 soon transformed the Picture Gallery into a relatively modern and professionally managed art institution. In the painful war year 1942, the collections of the abolished Modern Gallery came under the control of the National Gallery (officially the Gallery of Bohemia and Moravia). This dramatic development reflects the National Gallery's primary principle - elevation of the nation's s pirit through art. This ideal is seen as a basis of the National Gallery's work even today.
