DESCRIPTION : Up for auction with no reserve is a pair of handmade 19th century racing ice skates , likely of New England origin and made around the mid century period. The most unusual feature of these skates is the rather large curl of hand forged steel ending in a diamond finial at the tip. Each walnut platform retains its two leather fastenings with evidence of hand stitching on the heel harness. The toe straps are made of all leather, while the heel straps have two metal rings on each skate and can be used to hang the skates for display purposes. The platform heel has a grooved adjustable spike for attachment to a skating boot. These skates were purchased by me about 20 years ago at an auction in central New Hampshire. I have used them as part of an ice skating display that involves old photos, skaters lanterns and Russell Herner's book, Antique Ice Skates For the Collector. MEASUREMENTS: Overall length=14.25" Length of wooden platform=11.25" Width of platform (widest)=2.25" Platform height=2" Curl diameter (measured from ice to heighest point of metal curl)=5.5" Diamond diameter=.50" CONDITION : The original leather straps are thin, brittle, worn and generally in very poor shape . On one skate they remain intact, on the other the heel strap has torn completely in two spots. One of the tears is in the heel strap while the other is at the point of insertion into the platform. The torn section can be stitched or stapled together if the skates are to be used for display. Otherwise the leather straps will need to be replaced if skates are to be used. The wood of the platform is in generally good condition and of good color for the amount of wear the skates have had. The hand forged blades are superb in shape and appearance. PAYMENT DETAILS: I do not use any check out features so I will e-mail you following the sale to determine your location and send the shipping charge to that location. I plan to mail the skates via UPS Ground at a flat fee of $14. As an alternative to that I would be willing to send them USPS Parcel Post at a flat fee of $13. These fees are for the continental USA only. Shipping to other area will be based on the actual cost to your location. Insurance will not be required. I accept personal check, money order and bank check. You may return the item within one week of your receipt if it is not as described.(see return policy). Please WAIT for my e-mail following the sale. Feel free to ask any questions.
