Just in time for ice-cream season is this porcelain-enamel double-sided 18” diameter ice-cream sign with a 2 inch flange for hanging. A rare, outstanding piece of vintage Americana with great paint colors and graphics. A little rough around the edges, chipped paint and rust in random spots, both sides. Most letters are legible, but see photos for details. What makes this sign extra special is the story behind it. If you’re looking for character, history, and legend, then this is the piece for you! In 1926 the Reid Ice Cream Corporation paymaster in Newark, NJ was robbed and killed by 4 gangsters and their getaway driver making off with thousands of dollars in cash and checks. Later that year, the “Reid Bandits” were ratted out by their driver, captured, convicted, and sentenced to the death penalty. The next year they were all put to death in the electric chair at the NJ State Prison in Trenton. Additionally, the Reid Ice Cream Corp had a warehouse on Long Island, NY to stock its ice cream during the 1920’s. In 1928 the Reid Ice Cream Corp was sold to Borden, and that warehouse eventually became abandoned. Over the years the warehouse site developed quite a reputation for haunting legends.
